Here you will find reviews, highlights and general musings regarding all things 'Jeffreys'.
We have lots of crime buffs out there and while euro-crime is in the spotlight, we think that Australian crime has it's highlights too. The Ned Kelly shortlist for the best crime fiction has been announced:
Line of Sight - David Whish-Wilson
What a great read was 'Fire and Song - The story of Luis de Carvajal and the Mexican Inquisition' by Anna Lanyon, our latest for Brain Food Book Club. Lanyon's historical research was amazing and somehow she wove it into an incredibly captivating read. Saying I didn't know much about the Mexican Inquisition is probably a slight overstatement of my knowledge. I have come away with a rich picture of the times. My one criticism is that I didn't get much of a picture of life lived outside the fear of religious discovery. Although our discussion did flesh this out a little from the details we were provided with. Like 'Even Silence Has An End' by Ingrid Betancourt, this book of persecution made us all grateful to be living in Melbourne where we do have the freedom to follow our beliefs. I highly recommend this.
We'll have more information in our newsletter but wanted to quickly let you know that we have an event with Austen Tayshus on Wednesday 1 June. We will remain open from 5.30pm with Austen Tayshus appearing at 6.30pm.
Have just been alerted that Lee Child has released Chapter One of his new book. I'm partly reluctant to pass this information on as the book, in full, won't be available until October. Yes, this is a real teaser and I know how eager Lee Child fans are. So, if you dare, log into Facebook and see for yourself http://www.facebook.com/notes/jack-reacher-official/lee-child-the-affair-sneak-preview/196675637035138 . Just be warned - The Affair doesn't hit the shelves until October 2011!
Today we start our Jeffreys Blog. We have thought about it over the past few months - but what better day than today to start. Naturally, this could be said about all things.
Today, though, in the literary world marks the 2011 announcement of the Miles Franklin shortlist. And short it is with only three titles.
When Colts Ran by Roger McDonald and
That Deadman Dance by Kim Scott
I intend on inserting the judges' comments - but I need to learn how. Stay tuned.
It was also exciting today to see Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks hit the shelves. One of the Jeffreys Team (who shall remain nameless) read the proof copy while two more of us are eagerly awaiting it! Comments were very positive.
Enjoy your evening while I go off and learn a little more about this 'blogging with attachments' business.
Linda
PS I just found this handy little link to judges' comments. Click here.
