Batting for Berlin

Author(s): Andre Leslie

General

A hilarious true story about how a group of expatriate enthusiasts formed a cricket team in Berlin, Germany, conquered the snow and the local league and then represented German cricket in England and India. Australian Andre Leslie goes to Berlin for work and ends up playing cricket with the other expats at the Berlin Cricket Club (BCC). Despite being on the other side of the world and held together by a bunch of cricketing tragics, the BCC has something in common with all Australian club cricket teams - it is the real home of hard work, everyday heroes and dreams come true, especially in Germany, a country that was never really meant to play cricket. Despite the fact that playing cricket in Germany is such a thankless task - or perhaps because of this - Andre and his team-mates persist. The grand old game of cricket deserves the recognition. Even in Germany. After all, in what other country in the world does cricket get mistaken for polo, and you get asked where you stable your horses, much to the chagrin of Brian Mantle, the General Manager of the German Cricket Association?
