Football journalist Michael Gleeson has built a vivid picture of the men who secured the Magpies' drought-breaking premiership of 1990, and the events leading up to that memorable Grand Final. That team was arguably football's last great premiership team of characters, a roguish but revered combination that captured a famous club's sole glory in half a century. Obviously, 2010 recognises the 20th anniversary of that team's achievement. Laced with historical perspective and anecdotal material, Gleeson has spoken at length to all surviving members of the team, plus coach Leigh Matthews, his supporting staff and a number of the Essendon protagonists, including then-Bombers coach Kevin Sheedy.
